Alternatively, visit the wiki main page at http://olos.ala.org/bookmobiles, and click "Activities and Crafts," then "Build Your Own Bookmobile Cutout." Once you get to the page on the wiki, follow the directions to "save target as..." This seems to work best for most people. Please let me know if you have trouble downloading the file. I greatly enjoyed your Power-point show - what a fantastic idea! I was particularly amused to see the astonishing variety of vehicles in use across the USA - here in good old Blighty, the last time we tendered for new vehicles for our service, only three builders offered us designs! I notice that you have one or two 'foreign' services in your slide show, so I have included a couple of pictures of our latest vehicles, which you are welcome to use if you wish. The larger Mobile Libraries, obviously ply their trade in various fixed locations, to a bus-like timetable, as you'd expect. The smaller vehicles are used to operate our 'Home Service,' a door-to-door service for the housebound and elderly - they may come onto the vehicle to choose their own books, (we have a wheelchair/access lift at the back if required,) or our drivers will choose books for them, according to their stated preferences, and take them right into the home for them. We also have both sizes of vehicles equipped with awnings, external power supplies and other facilities to enable us to use them for a variety of outreach events, such as fairs and galas, etc. Some examples of the outreach we have done includes a "Health & Well-being Road-show," in a rural area here called the Holme Valley. Supported by our local Health Services, and local councillors, it included blood-pressure and diabetes checks, and a variety of advice and assistance sessions from other local council services. We visited a total of 16 locations in the area, spread over four days -and saw over 650 customers. One follow-up from this was that one of the council's benefits advisors has become a regular visitor on our home service runs - and up to press has been able to find over ?3000 per week in extra benefits, tax-credits and pensions assistance for over 50 of our customers! Partnership working has definitely been an enormous benefit to both us and our clients. Hope this is of interest, Jon Davis. (PS. Kirklees Council covers an area of Northern England including the towns of Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Batley, and around 40 smaller towns and villages. It covers an area around the same size as the five boroughs of New York City, but with a population the size of Buffalo. We operate regularly 6 mobile libraries and 4 Home Service libraries.) Action Alert: Ask your Representative to Sign Rep. Fortenberry's Dear Colleague on Lead in Children's Books! Take Action! As you know, Congress passed legislation titled "The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008" last August. This legislation seeks to decrease the levels of lead and phthalates in products intended for children 12 years of age or younger and is enforced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). This legislation was misinterpreted by the CPSC to include books. Thankfully, U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.) recently introduced legislation to amend the CPSIA to exempt ordinary books from the lead limits within the bill. This legislation specifically exempts books and would ensure that children can continue to have access to safe, educational and entertaining reading materials. Mr. Fortenberry cannot drive this legislation alone; he needs our help to ensure that his colleagues understand books are indeed a safe product, but our children's access to them is threatened because of the CPSC's current interpretation. Action Needed: In order to gain the attention this legislation deserves, please call or write your Representatives and ask them to cosponsor H.R. 1692. Time is of the essence; we have less than 11 months before the new implementation date arrives, and it is critical that we convince as many Members as possible to sign onto this legislation. Without our advocacy, this legislation will not move forward! Background: Currently, books are considered an unregulated product. This means they are generally considered safe and are not subject to the same rules and regulations as toys and other objects on the U.S. market. Under the new interpretation of the CPSIA, books would be subject to the same testing standards as children's toys and clothing. Very few recalls have actually involved books; in fact, the recalls surrounding books have not happened because of the books themselves but rather the toys that were attached to the books that were considered potential choking hazards. In spite of this information, the standard hardcover and paperback books would be subject to the same testing standards as children's toys under the new legislation. Publishers have tested the components of books and found that the levels of lead in children's books were far below the future legal requirements at the full implementation of the regulations three years from now. However, the advisory opinion from the CPSC says that not only must the testing be done by one of their certified labs but that this legislation also is retroactive, and every book currently in use must be tested. This situation will become even more complicated because the CPSC has not certified any labs to administer the lead testing. At this point, the CPSC has issued a one-year stay in implementation - meaning, the legislation will not be implemented until February 10, 2010. However, the CPSC has indicated that they will not permanently exclude books without some sort of clear Congressional action. Talking points on H.R. 1692: * Though the CPSC has interpreted the act to include ordinary books, Congress did not intend for them to be included. * This legislation would exempt ordinary books only - books that are published on paper of cardboard, printed by conventional publishing methods, intended to be read, and lacking inherent play value. * Testing has shown that finished books and their component materials contain total lead content at levels considered non-detectable. * The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has determined that there is little risk to children from lead in ordinary books. * Libraries are grateful for this bill since it is proven that reading books is critical to child development, and libraries would like to continue to provide this service without the threat of regulation that would unnecessary and expensive testing. As you might recall this conference is funded by a Librarians for the 21st Century grant through the Institute of Museums and Library Services which is enabling us to offer limited financial assistance to those tribal folks who may not otherwise be able to attend. The application process is competitive and will be based on demonstrated financial need. Scholarship Applications will be accepted until May 31, 2009 so please don't wait! You will find the criteria, what financial assistance you can request and, who to contact for more information on the website. Registration will be opening in Mid-May. I and the Planning Committee are currently selecting pre-conference workshops, conference program sessions, speakers and special events. I can tell you that this conference will be the one and only conference you will want to attend in 2009! And I will be telling you why very soon... I have been asked to ask people on this list if they have any suggestions that would " Revise the reference survey to better represent what librarians do and as a result, start to develop a new model for reference and information services." They are interested in what all staff members do, not just librarians. They are asking about libraries in general, but please feel free to include some of the special services provided by bookmobiles if you feel these should be acknowledged as well. My response was why not measure the quality of services, not just the quantity. Instead of only tracking reference and informational services, why not also count the specials services that staff members provide to the public that allows them to use library services, such as reading titles and publisher blubs for patrons with low vision and using the wheelchair lift to help them onto the bookmobile. I don't know any of my suggestions will be considered, but believe it was worth a try. Below is the blurb that was sent out to SFPL staff, including the email address to which you may reply. Thanks so much in advance to any of you who reply. Cora Iezza Broadly speaking, our task is to propose a revised Reference Survey that tracks how staff truly provides reference and information services. This is where you come in. We need your ideas. We know many of you - in all divisions, in all job classifications - have been frustrated that the Reference Survey doesn't reflect what reference work really looks like today. Here's your chance to weigh in. * What aren't you seeing on the Survey that you think a system-wide Reference Survey should include? * What patron services do you think the new Survey should track? * How can we ensure the new Survey isn't burdensome for staff? (Remember, right now we only survey for a total of two weeks a year but we use that data to represent activity for all 52 weeks.) We can't promise that all ideas will be incorporated into the final Survey but please know that all ideas are welcome and, indeed, necessary. We'd like to hear from you, starting now. Reply by e-mail to refstudysfpl at gmail.com Many thanks in advance for your help and good ideas. We have a new bookmobile that has limited space for displays on the back wall of the bus. The wall is made out of wooden slat wall/ slat board. The problem is finding some type of Plexiglas displays that can be displayed on an angle, preferably with sides on it, so the books don't slide out. I need the space to be long enough, approximately 24" to 36 ", side to side, to be able to hold a few books, and deep enough, approximately 6 inches, to be able to display a book or two and possibly a stuffed animal or something else behind it. There are Plexiglas displays available through DEMCO, Office Depot, etc. however, they are made for flat walls that don't bounce up and down or move while driving. They should be on at least a 15% angle, like the book shelves, so that the books and displayed items to not keep falling off or have to be rearranged every time we stop. Does anyone have a similar problem? What did you use? What company did you get them from, etc? I could really use some help with this, since I have been hunting for many months, without any real success. I would prefer not to have to use bungee cords across the displays and have to remove them at a stop. Thank you so much for any ideas. We don't use the catalog that much, we use it primarily for circulation. The catalog search is not as speedy as being in the library, but it is workable. Our circulation system has maybe a second delay, but works almost as fast as in house. We are currently using the broadband card AC595 with our laptops. We were having spotty connection issues until we replaced the outside antennas with the latest digital model. We worked with our Verizon engineers. Verizon and our IT dept went out to stops to test things and then decided to replace our antennas. They did all the work free of charge. They were wonderful. I would contact your Verizon rep and ask for help. If you have an IT dept get them involved with Verizon. I'm happy to get more info for you if you want it, but every geographic area is unique so I would ask for Verizon's help. Both of you should be in well covered Verizon areas. If you don't have outside antennas or they are old antennas.....look at those first. Let me know if you have any questions. Sorry, Claudia! ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Subject: Re: [ABOS] slow catalog onboard bookmobile We run Horizon through a remote desktop connection to a terminal server via a Verizon card. Our territory is a county which is about 24x36 miles. The Interstate basically cuts it in half. Not too surprisingly, our worst cell service is usually at the stops farthest from the Interstate, with one exception of a town near the Interstate in which the signal strength is great but the actual throughput(?) is very slow. Since it seems to be easier to keep Horizon running when it will, rather than try to wake it up when it falls "asleep" I often find myself pressing F8 over and over to switch back and forth between checkout and check-in when I see a customer working their way up to the desk. It's a pain, but it works. We have no PACs on board, which is a mixed blessing. I like the staff search interface, but if Horizon isn't running well it's very frustrating to not be able to help customers. We will be going through a server migration the beginning of May, and I'll be interested to see if this affects the bookmobile at all. I think that currently there isn't much running on the terminal server other than the bookmobile. I'm not sure where we'll end up next! On a side note, has anyone had problems printing receipts via a USB-connected Epson TM88-IV printer? That was a thorn in our side for a long time, but we finally got it solved. We just wish we had an interstate! We're very rural and serve primarily an Amish population from the bookmobiles-so I guess if we had an interstate, we wouldn't have Amish or tourism (good for the local economy). You might want to try usb modems with Verizon, they work faster. You also probably need the little EVDO antennas (if you run EVDO, if you are on IX-then the roof mount external antenna would be better). We would never do a public PAC unless our consortium would support it. Are you a stand-alone Horizon or are you part of a consortium. We use the remote server to go directly to our consortium and then it goes from their G (whatever line-faster than a T-1). But we have had lots of HIP trouble even in our buildings since we went to the latest Horizon upgrade-partly due to the fact that there are 70+ libraries in our consortium. It sounds like your server upgrade may help with the speed. If your current server is taxed, it will bog you down, because you might be the weakest link. Our thermal epson printers work pretty well-although there is a hesitation. Claudia On Mon, Apr 13, 2009 at 4:40 PM, Rebecca wrote: > Whoops! Even though we have migrated to the Millennium product, there are still several dead zones in our community where the only online connection is through a text - menu driven connection. Our IT department just contacted III again to see if the text product (anzio) will be available after July 2009. I wanted to let all the III libraries that they are planning to discontinue the product. I received this line in an email today. Iii has confirmed that they are still planning on the July 1, 2009 cut-off for Anzio. When I read the whole string of emails back and forth, it looked like they will be communicating with libraries still using the product. If this is important to your operation, then I would suggest you let III and your IT department know that you use it for your outreach circulation and that in some areas it is your only option. I contacted the staff at the Bureau of Commonwealth Libraries (Pennsylvania's official state library agency-we fall under the Department of Education) and they were able to pull this information from the annual reports that our libraries must submit to receive state funding. If Florida likewise requires that a report be filed annually with a state agency, you might be able to get a list of bookmobiles from them. So, I started bringing in my trusty Hoover Steam Cleaner and we have used it 2-3 times per year ever since. It works well getting into all the tiny spaces we have. In addition we vacuum daily. About 8 or 9 years ago we replaced our carpet in our Bluebird by just going to a local flooring store and had their installer lay it. We dropped the bookmobile off on a Friday, they did it on Saturday and we were ready to roll on Monday. That carpeting has worn much better than the original. Now, the reason apparently was that we used to put a runner down the center of the floor (stopping near the family barn can get nasty) thinking we were protecting the carpet. But the reality was, the runner was what ruined it. It had the little nubby things to keep it in place and all of the traffic just chewed up the jute in the carpet back. They also have national statistics, although less accurate ones. It's probable that the florida state library has the information you need for Florida bookmobiles. I too am working on a research project on house and homebound library programs, their variety and effectiveness in the US, and would like to know more about your project. Are you comparing homebound elderly who are currently have service or potentially could have service? How have you discovered the number of this population? Is this a national study or a local study? (The administration of the Public Library Survey moved to IMLS in 2007, which is why the data haven't been updated on the old site.) As Chris notes, there are probably some inaccuracies, but this is the most comprehensive data set available. I think the best way to get a list of bookmobiles by state is as follows: 1. Select a state from the drop down menu on the search page 2. Uncheck all boxes except "library system" 3. Click "search," and click "ok" when you get the warning message 4. Scroll to the bottom of the first results page and click on "download excel file." This will download a spreadsheet of all the data collected for every library system in the state. The number of bookmobiles for each system should be in column AJ (the variable is called BKMOB). The advantage of downloading the excel file is that you can see and manipulate the data. For example, you can use excel to total the BKMOB column, to get the total number of bookmobiles in the state. If you want to know the number of bookmobile programs (as opposed to the number of vehicles) in a state, you would check "bookmobiles" instead of "library system" in step 2. This won't give you the full data set, but will give you a count of the bookmobile programs. Either way, you'll have to do it one state at a time. If you're feeling more ambitious, you can download the entire raw data set for each FY through 2006 at http://harvester.census.gov/imls/data/pls/index.asp. Hope this helps. I'm curious about where you're getting data on the number of homebound elderly residents. Have you found a good data source for this? So, I will concede that you may do this under these conditions-No more than 20 items in your branch total (all formats should equal 20, not 20 of each format). When you place the hold-there should be no holds on it. If you discover there is a hold list once it is in your branch, I'd like you to send it along and replace it with another item. This is not the same as Denise ordering in books for her book club. For the book club or story times, I would have you create a card with Walnut Creek Programming as the name and then put story time and book club items on that card. That would keep your branch card clear for just these "display" type items. Please keep these items about 3 weeks if they aren't checked out-devise some method that allows you to know how long you've had it. Two days before you return items, place holds on items that will replace what you are returning. Under no circumstances should you keep items for more than a month/one patron check out. -- Claudia Zimmerman Head of Extension Services Holmes County District Public Library 3102 Glen Drive Millersburg, Ohio 44654 phone-330-674-5972 ext 212 fax-330-674-1938 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I'm working on a research paper and would like to compare the number of homebound elderly with the number of working bookmobiles, but I am having difficulty getting stats on bookmobiles. Ideally, I'd like a nationwide list to compare the number of bookmobiles in Florida with the stats for the rest of the U.S., but I'd be happy with just a list of Florida bookmobiles. From: Kristin Murphy, American Library Association [mailto:kmurphy at alawash.org] Sent: Wednesday, April 22, 2009 4:22 PM To: Satia Orange Subject: Please ask your Senators to support library funding! Urgent Call to Action! Ask your Senators to support library funding! Take Action! Please contact your Senators and ask them to sign the "Dear Colleague" letter being circulated by Senators Jack Reed (D-RI) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) in support of funding for the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) and the Improving Literacy Through School Libraries Program. The deadline to sign the letter is Tuesday May 5! LSTA and Improving Literacy Through School Libraries are two of the most important federal programs for libraries today. The letter will not be taken seriously, and it will appear as if Members of Congress do not care about libraries if we don't have 60 signers on the letter. Programs that don't have a vocal support network are in danger of being cut. The letter is addressed to the Senate Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriation Subcommittees and requests that the Senate include $300 million for the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) and $100 million for the Improving Literary Through School Libraries program for FY 2010. You can see the letter here . Please click the "Take Action" link in the upper right hand corner. This link will take you to sample language and direct it toward your specific Senator. When you contact your Senators you must ask him or her to call Andrew Odgren with Senator Reed at 202-224-4642 or Mathew Hussey with Senator Snowe at 202-224-5344. Talking Points: * The Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) was reauthorized as part of the Museum and Library Services Act of 2003 (H.R. 13) and signed by the President on September 25, 2003 (P.L. 108-81) * LSTA is the only federal funding program exclusively for libraries * The Grants to State Library Agencies program provides funds to State Library Administrative Agencies using a population-based formula. State libraries may use the appropriation to support statewide initiatives and services; they also may distribute the funds through subgrant competitions or cooperative agreements to public, academic, research, school, and special libraries in their state. * LSTA offers a variety of competitive grants available to librarians: The 21st Century Librarians Program; The National Leadership Grants; and the Native American Library Services: Enhancement Grants. * Around the country, knowledgeable librarians use the flexible LSTA funding to help patrons access essential information on a wide range of topics. They offer training on r?sum? development; help on web searches of job banks; workshops on career information; links to essential educational and community services; assistive devices for people with disabilities; family and youth literacy classes and services; homework help and mentoring programs; access to government information; a forum for enhanced civic engagement; summer reading programs and much more * LSTA provides funds to help libraries connect to each other electronically and provide users access to information through state, regional, national, and international networks * State libraries use LSTA funds to support statewide initiatives and also distribute the funds through subgrants or cooperative agreements to public, school, academic, research, and special libraries * LSTA funding enables libraries to pursue innovative opportunities, recruit and educate the next generation of librarians, and support research that is critical to libraries of all types * LSTA funds help libraries provide persons of limited financial resources or who live in remote areas, access to books and reference materials, computers and the internet, and community-based social services that are often available nowhere else * LSTA helps libraries serve as an important link to the business community, assisting with job creation and training programs, as well as assisting with business development initiatives If you no longer wish to receive e-mail from us, please click here . -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... How far away from a fixed facility are they. You have to start with a mission! and a plan. I would recommend ALA's planning for results. You cannot reach everyone (no matter what our hearts say); so, you must begin with a mission and know how you will grow, what services you can provide, and how those costs will be covered. We function as the library to over 40 Amish parochial schools, 8 public schools, several day cares, head starts, preschools, the MRDD facility, and any where the elderly or disabled live. That is our primary service. These people are the most vulnerable and under-served. Then, we look for areas of the county where there is no access to a library without a burden on the families (our Amish can hardly drive to town because of the tourism) and the other alternative is hiring a driver. We function to enrich the lives of those who need us and use us. Fortunately, we have tremendous support by the patrons. We have bookmobiles on the road the equivalent to 7 days a week (one full time on the road and an older one 2 days per week) and we circulated 185,000 items in a county of 40,000 during 2008. In addition we have request of service forms that we use for all types of facilities that help us determine the level of need, the appropriateness of service, parking, amount of time needed, and formats needed. In 1992 we were circulating 49,000 items per year and have more than tripled our circulation in 17 years - I believe that planning is the key to our success. Four libraries in the Chicago area, three public and one academic, were studied for two days each, utilizing a combination of observation, interviews and video. Researchers used mapping programs to track and time patrons' movements and interactions within the library, library patrons were given an exit survey to discover their experience in the library and what services they use, and small video cameras were installed in key areas of the libraries in order to capture behavioral patterns, traffic flow, and wait and transaction times. >From this study, best practices were developed and implemented at the partner libraries, with great success. All stops need to serve Anaheim residents inside the boundaries of Anaheim. The only exception is for contracted services. 1. Stops will be placed in high density, low-income neighborhoods with limited access to libraries. Preference is given to Community Development Block Grant areas and neighborhoods with Family Resource Centers. 2. Stops need to be at least one mile from any library facility unless there are extenuating reasons such as service to motel children, hazardous conditions in reaching a library facility, etc. Preference will be given to parts of the City that have fewer stops to ensure equitable distribution throughout Anaheim. 3. Once neighborhoods are adequately served, stops will be established in support of public schools and programs including the Anaheim Achieves and Head Start programs. Preference will be given to Community Development Block Grant areas or the service area of the school includes Block grant areas. 4. Stops serving seniors in clustered housing and private day care facilities will be considered. 5. Stops in neighborhoods and near schools not meeting the criteria above will be considered when higher priority needs are met. 6. Stops may be contracted on a time available basis with private agencies, schools and neighborhoods outside of Anaheim. Annual cost of a stop in Fiscal Year 2006/07 is $23,458. Are you suggesting that bookmobiles and homebound service are related in some way? The two services are often done from the same department, but most bookmobiles don't provide homebound service directly (unless you are talking about bookmobile service to senior facilities where some of the people are homebound.) Even then, providing materials to people who are homebound usually involves taking the materials off the bookmobile (or van or whatever) into the home. Sometimes this is a "lobby stop" type service. Some bookmobiles have ramps or wheelchair lifts that provide better access for people with disabilities (that population has some overlap with homebound elderly) but in general, bookmobile service and homebound service are not the same thing. I know of many libraries that have homebound delivery but do not have a bookmobile. We have both, and some people in our department work on both bookmobile and home delivery, but they are separate functions. Are you looking specifically for bookmobiles that serve homebound elderly? You might want to search instead on mobile library services, outreach services, delivery services, books-by-mail, or extension services. There has been some discussion on this list about what to call "homebound" services, so if you check the archives, you might come up with other terms to investigate. The federally funded program, known here in Illinois as Voices of Vision, might also be a source of info on homebound elderly. (Again, there will be overlap with younger people with disabilities.) In this video, the chairs of many of the committees charged with choosing the award winners discuss the winning books and why they were selected. This video is a companion to an article of the same name coming out in the May issue of American Libraries. Judy Krug Memorial http://alfocus.ala.org/videos/judy-krug-memorial A memorial video to intellectual freedom legend Judith Krug, the long-time director of the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom and Freedom to Read Foundation, featuring messages from colleagues, interviews featuring Judy, and photos of Judy from throughout her career. (This is the video shown at the staff memorial service.) Avi interview http://alfocus.ala.org/videos/avi-interview Legendary author Avi speaks to Booklist about Poppy and Ereth - his newest and most autobiographical book - as well as how he ended up with his famous name, how his lack of a distinctive style helps him as a writer, his thoughts on how the Newbery Award could improve, and which of his books is the "best." Hint: it's a trick question. Kate DiCamillo interview http://alfocus.ala.org/videos/kate-dicamillo-interview Kate DiCamillo, author of The Tale of Despereaux and Because of Winn-Dixie, sat down with Booklist's Ilene Cooper to talk about seeing her creations become major motion pictures, the surreal moments that came along with the Despereaux phenomenon, and her latest projects. Also, there's tons of laughing. 2009 ACRL National Conference http://alfocus.ala.org/videos/2009-acrl-national-conference In this overview of the 2009 Association of College and Research Libraries National Conference, keynoter Sherman Alexie discusses a terminology conundrum, Mary K. Van Ullen explains the effect of cultural differences on teaching about plagiarism, Diane Dallis describes Indiana University's planned research commons, and keynoter Ira Glass demonstrates how This American Life uses music to make stories come to life. Last summer, we had a performer. He amazed the children and teens. I will never forget a fifteen year old girl saying, "I have never seen anything like thing before". I am sure your program will be well received. We are still working on implementing this program, WOW (Writers on Wheels). It will hopefully consist of writers of all ages, some of our Library on Wheels stops has predominantly older adults and others are mostly teens. Since the teens and older adults do not drive much they flock to the Library on Wheels, we want to go one step further than provide books, internet access, and a place to go. We would like to enrich lives through sharing ideas, life experiences, providing a positive outlet, and helping others in the process. The how would be a portable file box with files, pen names (chosen by patrons) would be on each file. The participating patrons would turn in their short story or poems, library staff will make copies and distribute in the file folders. The patrons will review peers work, and critique, adding comments, compliments, and or constructive criticisms in red pen (at home or on the library), turn in to staff who will review (only because children are involved), staff in turn will place in the writers folder. Through the Writer Group we hope to improve writing skills, encourage other to write, and find their voice. The teen book club chose Tuesdays with Morrie as a book selection, so they will be able to see first hand the knowledge older adults have. Once a month I plan an enrichment program to correlate with our visits to the three local senior living facilities. I have authors, artists, singers, storytellers, etc. come and give a 45 minute performance/presentation to the senior residents, and then the bookmobile is onsite for them to check out materials. I have also started planning programs at the local schools. I would love to know if other bookmobiles across the country are doing the same thing. Thanks!
