But, when we have had Bookmobiles with 2 doors, we have tried to get everyone to enter through the back door and then leave through the front door. This has helped the flow somewhat at schools or other organized programs where there are a large number of kids to manage (these kinds of stops sometimes have teachers or other adults to help the kids follow this route). This has worked fairly well on trucks with a desk at each end or with both desks in the front. I put yellow tape on the door handle of our newest truck so it is visible and easily described from across the truck. This may speed things up a bit and increase safety. If you have some type of behavior rules or guidelines, it would be a good idea to post them in a visible place and enforce them. Probably each library needs to decide their own real occupancy limit based upon their experiences and gut feelings because trucks vary so much as do stops. A stop with quiet families is very different than one with groups of teens and uninhibited adults. The number of staff and time of day may also be factors. I like having a crowded truck as long as they are behaving appropriately. One is the size of a van and the other is a walk into truck with steps. When we used the van we tried to get people to go in the sides and out the back ramp. Did not always work for elderly patrons or little children but we got the job done. Now the van goes to assisted living spaces and Head Start schools so they carry all their materials on two large carts and no one goes on the van but library workers. The larger truck has about 75 sq ft but only one door. It is difficult as people enter and then right there is the desk so they stop to turn books in and talk and block access to patrons following them. We just try to be friendly and offer to help and keep them moving. The people counter is over the entrance steps so that number can get skewed when patrons stop on the steps the counter just keeps counting..... We have set a maximum of 10 middle school age kids or older kids in groups. The kids start rocking the bookmobile and causes us to assume a more stricter attitude which we do not enjoy. Also we have "lost" materials in such circumstances. I have had over 15 kindergarteners plus the teachers. Organization is the key. We have one worker just helping patrons as they enter or exit and the other worker just doing circulation duties. This helps us keep things moving. It really helps to have 2 doors.... Therefore, I am asking this question in order to possibly learn from anyone else who might have had to deal with an issue involving reserves. Like most of you, our library is automated. Through this automation, patrons (bookmobile & library patrons alike) can reserve items, as long as they have access to a computer and the Internet. In addition, the practice has been--long before I was hired--for individual staff members to reserve items for patrons who use the bookmobile. I don't have a problem with patrons reserving books, DVDs, and what have you. However, I am beginning to recognize a problem in staff reserving materials because we now have this on-going list of reserves that is getting out of hand. On more than one occasion, a patron has come into the library to ask for a new title but will leave empty handed because the book is being circulated among patrons at XYZ bookmobile stop. And it will likely be weeks before it returns to the library. Such a problem is caused not by other patrons making a reserve before anyone else. The problem is caused by staff sitting at their computers and marking items for reserve by browsing through their bookmobile patron lists. I was thinking about simply doing away with the ability to reserve items through our automated system. Of course, that would hurt those patrons who are not abusing it. It is being abused by one or two staff members. I am trying to find a solution that will last, and I am trying to be careful not to cut off my nose to spite my face. Better yet, if anyone would be willing to discuss this issue further over the phone, I would be more than happy to call. Long distance is not a problem for me. I hope that someone who works with bookmobile service can relate and offer some sage advice. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: We only limit at schools and do up to 20 holds for patrons. (we circulate between 17K and 20K items per month). However, the thing to remember is--if your library is supported by any kind of taxes-are your bookmobile patrons less equal. If they requested the item, then the matrix for your holds manages the cue and people get the items in the order they were requested. Perhaps the problem is that your library should order fewer titles and more copies of the most popular items. We focus on having more copies of the most popular items and therefore we rely on our consortium to purchase authors that are not as popular with our patrons. To me, putting materials that you know someone will like on hold for them is simply good service. Many of our patrons use our service exclusively so they must put up with the limited time we are at a stop as well as the relatively small selection of materials we can offer. In contrast, a branch or main library patron would likely have more time to browse (and could do this at a time of their choosing) and would have a much larger collection to choose from. Most static libraries have a variety of reader's advisory / best seller information and displays available that could help patrons choose what materials to reserve. There is much less display space on most vehicles or carts to inform patrons of these things so the patron has to rely more on us. I look at myself as a "personal shopper" for them because they can't do many of the traditional library activities for themselves. We had a controversy about this because other staff saw the holds stacked up for my department. Pointing out that we see the customers every 2 weeks and take all of our reserves at that time and then place them all at the same time when we are back in the office seemed to explain things a bit. As did explaining that when you are in a room of patrons and one asks for a bestseller or really popular subject then everyone wants the same title (most traditional librarians see their patrons one at a time or via the phone). This year Akron started a program called "Hot Picks" where we have some of the most popular titles on a non-reservable status so they can be found on the shelf by browsers. They can't be checked out by staff or put aside for someone; they go directly to the shelf. So far this has worked out well and may end up soothing some of the outreach "haters". Some of the libraries in our system run a program in which people can put their names on automatic holds lists for their favorite authors , e.g. Grisham, Clark, Steel, Kingsbury etc. which caused similar issues with holds lists often adding up to hundreds of patrons before books even hit the shelves. We finally put into place a policy that a copy of the book needed to be purchased for every 4 holds placed on a book. I liked that solution. Reserves should impact collection development practices and ideally have some measurable impact on how many copies of books are purchased. We also developed what we call a purchase alert system. Now once a week, a staff person pulls a list of any book that has more than two holds per owned title. I use the list frequently to monitor whether our purchasing actually matches the known demand. It helps us catch those sleeper hits that come out of nowhere much earlier than we used to. Since our on-board collection is relatively small, it is imperative that we actually carry what people want to read and holds and reserves are a crucial part of being able to do that. I just wanted to thank everyone who took the time to reply to my request about bookbus shelving. I should have said that our shelves are sloped but that the driving examiner wanted something more secure. I understand her concern better now, as we had to go over a shallow ditch the other day to drive onto the lawn of a local park (don't ask). I do realize that many libraries operate extension services in the form of a van, which makes scheduled drops at nursing homes, retirement communities, etc. Of course, this would be more economical than driving a 3-5 ton vehicle than might get six or seven miles to the gallon. On the other hand, what about those places that are typically serviced by a bookmobile? In rural communities, apartment complexes, and at schools, would it possible to design a method that is possibly more economical? I am asking this question because I am expected to broach the subject for my county commissioners. Next summer I am going to either ask for a brand-new bookmobile, or I'm going to offer a more "cost effective" solution. One or two of these commissioners has asked me whether or not I have considered service points being established out in the rural communities, such as in the back of a community hall or county agency building. Patrons could then make their searches and requests by using our OPAC. A 1.5 ton van could then be used by the library to simply drop the items on periodic basis. Maybe that sounds good on paper... What about those patrons who do not have computers, much less Internet access? Besides that, what special provisions have to be made for a "service point" to exist, e.g. Internet access, climate control, security, space, etc.? Have any of you had to justify to a commissioners' court or other administrative board the necessity of a bookmobile service AS IT IS? For those libraries that used to operate bookmobile services and no longer do, I wonder how it has affected their patronage... Of course, I have no reservations in asking for a new bookmobile; yet, I am expected to investigate other options and then present my findings next summer. For the sake of argument, I do want to show them that I did put forth the effort in doing an investigation. (Then they could end up granting me a new bookmobile anyway and then leave me alone!) I certainly appreciate any insight that can be offered. How often did it come? Did someone on the bookmobile staff help you find a great book that was memorable for you? What did the bookmobile look like? Do you remember any celebrations or parades or community events that the bookmobile was a part of? Did you get your first library card at the bookmobile? Did you do participate in the summer reading program at the bookmobile? Did you do any crafts or attend puppet shows or other programs at the bookmobile? They have a tendency to draw up debris from the road and clog the system. Even while stopped the generator will draw up dust so watch it if you park on dirt lot windy area or area with debris. I usually run water over the generators radiator when I wash the rig. Do not use a power washer or run the water to high or you will bend the fins. Also never wash the generator or get water into areas water does not belong. Running water over the radiator will clean out some of that dirt and debris and help keep up the generator life. Schools in the area either don't have libraries, or if they do have a library it is under-staffed and rarely staffed with a professional librarian. There are a large number of charter schools that also don't have ideal libraries/services/staff. There is a city right next door that hasn't had a library in years. Residents are asked to go to a neighboring city to use library services. The larger metro area has high poverty rates and public transportation is limited and notoriously spotty. For the last two years, I have worked on a literacy outreach project to K-12 schools that has given me first-hand knowledge of the extent of these problems. A colleague and I (we both have MLIS degrees) are interested in starting a nonprofit organization that would be a mobile library focusing on children and parents in the area. Our idea is to focus on areas of high poverty where transportation to a branch library becomes an issue. We do not wish to compete with the large public library system in the area. We are committed to operating the mobile library in areas that are at least 1 mile from any library building. We are also committed to providing people with information about local public library services. Our intention is to focus on schools that may wish to use our services, community centers, and other cooperating organizations. My colleague and I have grant writing experience and are optimistic that we can get funding. Since we are starting at 0, we are interested in purchasing a small used passenger bus and converting it ourselves. Does anyone have experience with turning such a vehicle into a bookmobile? I'm just curious about any DIY experiences those on this list have had. all best, Heather -- Heather Harrison deccah at gmail.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Satia, While I know your retirement is an advancement toward more exciting and enriching times for you, it's a bummer for me. I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed our chats and exchange of ideas (often over libations) at the conferences. We will all really miss you. I remember your telling me you have a relative or friend in Charleston. I'm thinking you said a cousin. When you come to visit please give me a shout, I'd love to take you to dinner and get up to speed on the joys of retirement. Dear colleagues: As your ALA staff liaison, I will unsubscribe to this list on Friday, July 31, 2009! I am retiring as of August 31, 2009. What I learn from your postings of effective practices and advisories mentors others in OLOS communities! OLOS STAFFING Miguel Figueroa, director for the ALA Office for Diversity will be the Acting Director of OLOS (ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services) until spring, when the search for a new OLOS director will be launched. In addition, Isaac Tufvesson, OLOS Communication Specialist, will be leaving ALA as of August 13, 2009 for an advanced educational opportunity. A temporary employee will serve in his capacity, until his position is filled (fulltime) in early fall. Please support the efforts of Elliot Mandel, OLOS Program Coordinator, Dale Lipschultz, OLOS Literacy Officer, and Miguel in his double capacity, during this transitional time. They will continue the OLOS mission of providing 'technical assistance, training, educational resources' toward services to traditionally underserved populations in America's libraries. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! Please accept my personal appreciation for your sharing of expertise, your comments, and your collaborations with OLOS! Thanks also for your support of me in my 12 years as your ALA staff liaison! In parting, you've heard me say this before, but please continue to: * support the efforts of your leadership in working strategically on collaborations with other ALA units to broaden your unit and Association visions of service and advocacy; * focus on representing global library staff who may share your professional perspectives, and who are working in local library communities, who may not attend annual conferences or midwinter meetings, or even be ALA members, but who depend on benefiting from your global and informed advocacy for libraries, and library outreach; * develop tools and resources that increase the benefit of your collective expertise and impact to local constituencies; * use your collective voices to address your units' concerns for the Association and profession as a whole. Finally, please continue to work toward the Association's mission, focusing on the last ten (10) words which highlight the OLOS mission: "To provide leadership for the development, promotion and improvement of library and information services and the profession of librarianship in order to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all."
