Each subject gives you ideas for books to use, songs, videos, crafts, finger plays and other creative dramatics. They are Storytime Crafts, Seasonal Storytime Crafts, Crazy Days Storytime Crafts and Let?s Read Storytime Crafts all from Highsmith Press. They are available through ILL from many libraries, and can be purchased on Amazon.com. This July I have a new book coming out from Neal Schuman Publishers called Family Literacy Storytimes. The focus of this new book is helping families learn English and literacy skills at storytime. These books have themed storytime plans with bibliographies of selected recently published picture books that are appropriate for read aloud and are appropriate for toddlers and preschoolers. Also there are many connecting activities such as rhymes games and songs, and craft patterns. In your format of 5-7 minutes I recommend an opening rhyme or song (try to use the same one each time) read one picture book, do a literacy activity related to the picture book (see Family Literacy Storytimes for more about this), and close with another rhyme or song. You can also show the covers of 2 or 3 more picture books that you recommend and they will certainly be checked out by your enthusiastic storytime crowd. I wish you success with your bookmobile storytimes! I do programming at several stops-mostly preschool age. I do not have a lot of space after 18 children and several teachers come on the bus. So I have found that telling a story that uses a few props works best. Some I have done that have worked well: Stephanie's Pony Tail by Robert Munsch-using just a fake ponytail Monkey Face by Frank Asch using pupperts and a large pad to draw on The Fat Cat or the Exploding Frog using just a balloon that I blow larger and larger Mouse Count using a jar, 10 mice and a snake puppet Down the Back of the Chair by Margaret Mahy-worked great as the driver pulled the objects from her chair as I read the book. I only have time at each stop to do one story and then the children pick books for the next two weeks. This week we are going to try simple origami at one of our after school stops where we see school age children. It is a craft that does not make a mess so I am hoping they enjoy it. Hope that helps-Dianne *********** REPLY SEPARATOR *********** On 5/4/2009 at 10:08 AM Ann Swartz wrote: I am looking for some storytime ideas (books, activities, etc) that I can do on the Bookmobile that don't take too much time or too much space. The EPA, Generations United, the Dance Exchange, and the Rachel Carson Council, Inc., announce a poetry, essay, photo and dance contest "that best expresses the Sense of Wonder that you feel for the sea, the night sky, forests, birds, wildlife, and all that is beautiful to your eyes." We want you to share this love of nature with a child and others around you. When we teach our eyes and ears and senses to focus on the wonders of nature, we open ourselves to the wonders around us. In 2009 many people, communities and organizations across the United States will be celebrating the Year of Science , consider submitting an entry expressing how science has contributed to your sense of wonder and appreciation of the natural environment. Contestants will work across generations to share through one of these distinct mediums their own interactions with and reflections on the wonders of nature. Dance video entries are not limited to the moving body. You can use live performers and/ or capture movement and change visible in nature: birds landing, trees shaking in a storm, a river flowing... It would be wonderful to have an Outreach or Bookmobile representative on the Council or an officer of ALA. Hi all, Each year I forward this message to all of you, encouraging you to share with and encourage your members/colleagues to consider nominating themselves and their associates. This opportunity offers a multiple benefit to the nominee AND the organization, win or not! Alerting ALA leadership that you are interested and willing to share in ALA's governance responsibilities certainly benefits our Association toward a more diverse representation of the issues our profession holds dear! So, when you are concerned about the depth of concern from ALA about your issues, note that even the makeup of the Nominating Committee is diverse, including more than one constituency! And so, once again, thanks for sharing! Lately, a county official has raised a question regarding the county bookmobile operating within a few of the surrounding cities. As I have explained, the county bookmobile has traditionally been a rural service, operating in the unincorporated parts of the county. However, over the years, the bookmobile has been bringing library materials into the cities because the cities were not doing any sort of outreach or extension service. Specifically, we were using the county bookmobile to service nursing homes, daycare facilities, retirement communities, and even schools. I also pointed out that people were requesting the county service--we weren't asking them. Now, as county library director, I have been asked to talk to the city libraries about establishing interlocal agreements. A few officials had talked about possibly requiring these cities to pay into a county library fund for providing such service, but I know that that is not going to happen. I suppose that the key is to have written agreements in place, but I am not sure how to do so, thereby making county officials happy, not creating hard feelings with the city librarians, and continuing a much-needed outreach service to patrons who are both county AND city taxpayers. Has anyone else had the same or a similar experience? Please advise. Let them know how important this project is going to be to those that live in your service area and that this is a project that would be a model program that will benefit many for years to come. Ask them to help you be included in any list of projects to be funded.? And by all means have your proposal, estimates, and rfp ready to go at a moment's notice. I have been running the Bookmobile for about 9 months now and I have a great problem - I have done a good job getting the word out to people about the Bookmobile (I used everyone's advice from this listserv) that I am overbooked. I have about 10 organizations on the waiting list with more coming in daily. The problem I have is that I currently run about 73 stops on a two week schedule. My supervisor has suggested adding another week in here to try and accomodate some of my people on the waiting list. Does anyone out there run a three week schedule? I have been running the Bookmobile for about 9 months now and I have a great problem - I have done a good job getting the word out to people about the Bookmobile (I used everyone's advice from this listserv) that I am overbooked. I have about 10 organizations on the waiting list with more coming in daily. The problem I have is that I currently run about 73 stops on a two week schedule. My supervisor has suggested adding another week in here to try and accomodate some of my people on the waiting list. Does anyone out there run a three week schedule? I also am the primary library for my rural schools and I do not think they can wait three weeks, does anyone have a day dedicated to the schools for that purpose? Guidance is much appreciated. Causing over $6,000 worth of damage to repair, as per a quote received this morning. I have a Stock MSV Series 5000 bus, and the generator was an Onan 10kW Quiet Diesel. Obviously, the cost of replacement may just be a better option, given the high price of the repair. In the past, we have had numerous issues with the Onan - almost $3,000 spent on it just last year. Hive mind - any suggestions and or info regarding your own experience with brands other than the Cummings Onan? I know Cummings is considered the best by many, but I may go with something else... The rest is context and a meditation on what workflow and demand issues might impact the size of such a collection. KCLS provides homebound service to about 400 patrons and lobby service to 150 senior facilities with a monthly door count of 1200. Since we select for lobby service patrons just as we do our homebound patrons, I'd put our "extensive selection" load at around 1000 patrons. In addition to drawing on the collections of our 46 community libraries, we have our own collection of about 60,000 items, the vast majority being Large Print (the not so vast majority being Pepto-Bismal pink with titles starting "The Greek Tycoon's" etc.). As our collection also has served as the library system's LP repository, I'd recommend a significantly smaller collection. Before I start talking numbers, though, I'd advise you to discuss suppressing your collection from general access--having catalog access is important for your staff to identify and locate resources, but free the items from being requested by non-outreach patrons and staff. There's no point in developing a core group of quality resources only to never have them on your shelves when you need them. Another consideration is how many staff members do you have and how reliant are your patrons on staff to place holds or recommend titles. Our team are amazing "personal shoppers," selecting most of the materials based on standing requests and continuing Readers Advisory. If you are mostly delivering specific holds selected and placed by your patrons, you'll have less of a need for an extensive core collection. Our standard, repeating requests are often the following: 20 LP gentle mysteries, or 15 new DVDs, or 30 audiobooks. Adult Family Homes and Activity Directors will request on average 30 items, consisting of 5-10 coffee table books, 5 music CDs, a 5-10 of movies, and a number of LP or audiobooks. We fill a lot of this with holds, but come delivery day, we need to fill in the gaps. With my staff of 9 outreach specialists (6 FT, 3 .75) performing up to 85% selection, if I were to trim my collection to only meet the needs of my homebound patrons while being able to draw from at least 25 community libraries without them borrowing from my collection, I'd retain 2000 LP (mixed FIC/NF), 1500 reg. print NF, 1000 reg. print FIC, 700 DVD/Videos, and 150 CDs. New, popular items and patron-originated requests would draw from the system's collections, and this outreach collection would provide quality filler. We've also recently purchased a special collection of popular holiday DVDs (200 items, all suppressed) since seasonal demand either strips our shelves or our patrons' extended check out period adversely impacts branch access. Another boon to our workflow is increased holds limit, allowing our staff to order ahead. Regular patrons are limited to 25 holds, whereas outreach patrons get 50. Too many and things sit on the holds shelf month after month, but too few and you're scrambling. Lots of considerations! My staff does a lot of selection, and we rely heavily on the branch libraries to fill our holds. But with the "fall back" collection described above, I think you could stay above water! Let me know if you have any questions! I'd love to hear how you manage 700 homebound patrons with your current resources! The goal of the survey is to assess the skills and techniques used by small and rural libraries to build community relations, and to determine what activities and resources are used to build those relations or improve upon those relations. This email is a request for your assistance with the survey. It should take approximately 15 minutes to complete, and will remain anonymous, unless you select otherwise. The results of this survey will be presented to the Public Library Association and the American Library Association and will assist in the aggregation of current resources for small and rural librarians and the development of new resources. You can access the survey at: http://tinyurl.com/CommunityRelations. The survey will remain open until May 29, 2009. For example, the closing of a school library in a community will have impact on the public library in that community, which now has to deal with overflow from the school; as well as the college library, which now has to teach remedial information literacy skills to incoming freshmen. In order not just to survive but to thrive in today?s economy, libraries of all types must come together and advocate with a unified voice. To that end, I have created a special task force that is working with the Office for Library Advocacy to produce a web resource on this topic. The Building Coalitions web resource will be part of Advocacy University, and will launch at our annual conference in July. We have engaged Library Strategies, a consulting group of The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library, to help us build this website. Your input is needed! Library Strategies has compiled a brief survey to help identify libraries and library organizations which are involved, or have been involved, in advocacy coalitions. I ask that you take just two-three minutes to fill out this survey at http://tinyurl.com/advocacyuniversity. Your input is important in helping us continue to serve libraries and library organizations in their advocacy efforts. In addition, if you are attending the 2009 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, please attend my panel discussion, Coalition Building for All Libraries in a Tough Economy, Saturday, July 11, 4;00 to 5:30, McCormick Place West, Room 196B. They are designed to train and empower parents with tips and techniques to get their pre-school age children ready to read before they go to Kindergarten...This is a HUGE step in them being on grade level by 3rd grade. A lot of title I parents just aren't sure how to do these things or are not confident in their education level. The program shows them that they are more than capable of helping their children become readers regardless of their age, education or even language. What has been happening with us is this: The school hosts a workshop for parents of preschoolers DPL sends a representative to teach the workshop Parents are educated and can sign up for library cards We usually try to get someone from the local branch to teach the workshops. Last year we were able to reach 10,000 children!!! I can get you more information about the program. Feel free to contact me. One of the most useful things I took away from the training was how to implement literacy activities with whatever you can get your hands on. It was really.... liberating. While we aren't specifically implementing this as training sessions for parents on our bookmobile, I often do offer the tips one-on-one with parents of young children we see. I think they really open up to the idea when they find they don't have to seek out "just" certain books for certain skills, and that almost any book can be used to reinforce more than one skill. Oh, another useful thing I took with me from the training was about asking kids to rhyme using whatever words you come across in a book: "Just don't start with duck." :) If there is any way your library staff could participate in a training like this, I highly recommend it! While I was busy helping other kids he decided to try it out. This annoyed me a good deal, and I was considering whether to kick him off of the bus when another thought occurred to me. I handed him a book of poetry by Nikki Grimes and told him he could read that over the P.A. system or else he had to turn it off. To my surprise, he opted to read the poetry. Within 5 minutes, the bookmobile was full of teens and tweens waiting for their turn to read. Instant Poetry Slam. The young man asked me to bring him poetry by latinos for the next visit. I have an ever-growing list of requests for stops, and some folks are getting quite insistent. The stops I already have are becoming busier every day, too. I have been asking for help unsuccessfully for the past several years - the Library Board supports me completely but the County can't seem to come up with any money. With the economic situation, there's not much hope for help in the near future (and, yes, I am grateful that I still have a job!) I, too, have been considering the idea that I might need to make major changes to the schedule in order to accommodate more stops and to keep from having to work 10 and 11 hours every day. My annual review with my director is coming up and I'll broach the subject then. Changing some stops to once-a-month would seem to cause the least disruption, but something tells me my patrons are NOT going to like it! (For example, I shared with her information on the public library in the greater Los Angeles area that was doing a bridal fair to help the local economy by providing a venue for small businesses to display their wares/services and providing an opportunity for future brides/families to attend . Please share with me what have done with all age groups. If the interviewer selects some of the programs to mention, it will be great PR for your library. [I am not going to select what goes forward, I will just forward your emails on to the interviewer]. More specifically, here is what she needs --- various creative programming, instructional and for entertainment, being offered in response to the economy. Help me get the word out about the great, innovative programs/services we do in our public libraries! Also, please feel free to reply to my address above. Many thanks! [p.s. This interview will come out in the July or August issue]. We place copies is each of our 11 libraries. * We post our schedule to our web site. The site (http://www3.leegov.com/library/progserv/ssvcs/mo.htm) also has pdf files with Bookmobile coloring pages and cut out replicas. * We make sure each stop has a bunch of schedules to display, take them to meetings to share with community partners, and use them as handouts at presentations to various groups. * We maintain a floor display unit at the local workforce development office and keep it loaded with schedules and other outreach and library flyers * The rear exterior of the Bookmobile has a sign holder where we put signs to advertise things like Summer Reading Program and our reading festival. * We take the Bookmobile to over a dozen community events each year to represent the library system. Our new bus is beautiful and generates the rolling billboard impact all by itself. Kathy Mayo, Outreach Services Manager Lee County Library System 21100 Three Oaks Pkwy. Some context: Seattle Public Library provides mobile services for Seattle residents who are unable to reach the library because of age, disability, or illness. We provide services to facilities such as retirement homes, low-income apartments, and childcares, and to homebound individuals, both in person and by mail. Our stops are on a monthly schedule. We do not have any community stops. Our publicity materials now include six-month calendars that we distribute to facilities with the date and time of our visits for that period, bookmarks with information about our home service program (pdf attached to this email), and a Mobile Services brochure describing all of our services. These materials are currently available in English and our library's ESL/World Languages staff are translating them into several other languages as well. We actively promote Mobile Services to other library staff throughout our system. Information about Mobile Services is available on the library's web site and on our staff intranet. In addition, we regularly visit the unit meetings of other branches and departments to talk about our services, answer questions, and encourage other staff to refer patrons to us. Our printed publicity materials are available at library branches. Several other projects are currently underway. We are creating a poster that will be displayed at facilities we currently visit, explaining what we do and what we can do, and a flyer with information to give to building managers/activities directors/etc., for them to distribute to residents of the facilities we visit who may not be aware of our services. We are also working on a plan for better external distribution of our home service publicity. Right now it is mainly used in the library, but we really want to reach people who aren't coming to the library, so we're working on developing and making use of our community contacts to reach people who might be eligible for the service. We plan to target referral agencies, other agencies serving similar populations, etc. For example, we have given the brochure to our local Meals on Wheels agency to distribute to their clientele, and we are listed in our county 2-11 social services directory. On a related note, I've started a page on the OLOS bookmobile wiki to collect examples of bookmobile and outreach publicity: http://olos.ala.org/bookmobiles/index.php?title=Bookmobile_Advertising. I will add suggestions from this discussion (with permission) and I encourage you all to contribute!
