I would just add to what Kathy said that the majority of our bookmobile's customers are interested in recreational reading, so it's rare that we get questions that require much research. Our most common reference questions are along the line of "When does the new James Patterson come out?" or "What's on Oprah's reading list this month?" We have some home-schoolers, but they're asking for books about certain subjects, rather than answers to questions. Our only reference tools are our catalog and the Internet, and that's usually sufficient; if someone did have a research-oriented question, we'd call it in to the main library. This depends on what the residents want and what their mental capacity will allow. The volunteer may read stories from the daily newspaper, excerpts from Reminisce Magazine, chapters of books or whatever the residents request. One lady asked if the volunteer could read the supermarket ads because she missed cooking and wanted to plan meals in her head. I have attached an excel spreadsheet with some possible recommendations. Do you use volunteers? What, if any, activities do you have? Multnomah County Library identified a need for more library related actitivities in nursing homes and independent living complexes, and developed a volunteer-based reading program called Visiting Voices. A Visiting Voices volunteer goes to a facility once a week and reads to a crowd of anywhere from 5 to 20 residents. How long is the program? 30 - 45 minutes at a time. How long does it take to prepare? Volunteers tell me that they spend about a hour a week in preparation. Is it worth the effort? A dedicated volunteer can certainly brighten up the day/week of this group of one of our most vulnerable populations. Any advice for me? There needs to be a clear understanding of what the visiting facility, the volunteer and the library's role in coordinating this program. I have attached a "Letter of Understanding" that the facility is required to sign. Also, Outreach Services at Santa Cruz Public Libraries, of which I'm part, does programs for developmentally disabled adults that respond to sme of the same needs; in fact, your question sparked discussion here about expanding our programs to include the communities you mention. Once a month, 2 staff members do a very theatrical storytime, using either a single work (at one site) or part of a longer work (at a site with a different demographic) that we read over the course of several months. After the story, we take a break to stretch & look at related books that we've brought from the library. We conclude with a poem, often humorous, preferably with a refrain or other opportunity for our audience to join in. We always get applause. It's a nice way to start the work day! Due to a recent breach of contract by the Hall County (Nebraska) Board of Supervisors, our bookmobile service has ended and the vehicle has been returned to the county. Litigation was discussed but not pursued. Instead, we've temporarily patched together our remaining outreach to the youngest and eldest of Grand Island and in time hope to have a dedicated city vehicle. However, the breach of contract has not only ended a 48 year bookmobile service to county residents but also their free walk-in service at our library, and so a decision on nonresident fees will be made at the March library board meeting. In the meantime, the county has decided to dispose of the vehicle on March 20, 2010 through the services of a local auction house (see http://www.wieckauction.com/auctions.htm). It will be held on Thursday October 14 through Saturday October 15. The conference will end mid-day after our awards luncheon on Saturday. The will be an welcoming event on the evening of October 13. There will be entertaining evening events opportunities. The conference hotel is the Denver Airport Crowne Plaza. 1550 East 40th Ave. Denver, CO 80239. 1-800-593-5447. The rooms will be $99.00 per night plus taxes. You can make your reservation now and make sure they know you are coming to the ABOS/ARSL conference to get this super conference rate. Registration fee... This is still in planning stages, but I think you would be safe in saying $200.00 if you register early--- and more if you register at the door. More info about is late spring or summer. Food: our conference provides a lot of food. You will not starve. You will have a free breakfast. There will be a keynote lunch which you would have to pay for if you want to go. I am not sure exactly how much, but I would budget $25-$35 for the lunch if you plan to attend. We have lots of snacks throughout the day. There is the awards lunch on the last day which is free to members - the "Spud-o-Rama". which features a large baked potato and everything you can imagine to put load it up - plus salad, rolls and desert. Breakout sessions: Besides our Keynote Speakers, you will have lots to select from - actually double our normal breakouts. I can't tell you what they are yet, because the committee hasn't selected them yet - but you will see breakouts about all aspects of bookmobile and outreach service plus a lot of innovative programs throughout the country. For those from Small and rural areas, you will have even more to choose from. If you have never come to one of our conferences, you will be amazed because you are never going to find a group of people with so much expertise nor a group so passionate about what we do. It is a cozy conference and you meet lots of people from the listserv. Lots of comparing notes. I come back from the conference inspired and full of worthwhile and exciting ideas. If your library is thinking about buying a mobile unit - this is a chance to see the bookmobiles of all sizes. It is a chance to compare notes and talk to the experts. So if you have any questions let me know. But as Rose said- we are still in the planning stages. For those of you who want to know about the conference after Denver - our next venue will be Cleveland, Ohio in 2011 and then we would like to move more East in 2012. -- MaryAnne Marjamaa Vice-President President Elect Program Planning Committee Manager, Outreach Services St. Louis County Library St. Louis, MO 63131 qamarjamaa at gmail.com 314-994-3300 x 2330 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Subject: [ABOS] conference information Let me see if I can fill in some information about the upcoming ABOS/ARSL joint conference in Denver Colorado. This affects people who are trying to access the web using a PC modem card. I just spent 40 minutes on the phone with a Verizon Tech trying to determine why I couldn't access the web from my bookmobile laptop. Hopefully, it will be fixed soon. I have carried one of our double-sided carts on and off the Bookmobile (I unloaded it first!). I'll be glad to work up a version with just the rough outline of a Farber elf. I will not be able to create this blank version until this weekend. - I have another version in Microsoft Excel that was created by someone else. I modified it to work for my farber elf. I will be glad to email the original excel and my version to anyone who wants it. Rose was kind enough to send me the file for making one. I can't seem to edit it correctly to put my library info on it. I was wondering if anyone had a blank version? I have the 28' Elf from Farber. I'm trying to get this together for National Bookmobile Day. I'm looking forward to a fun day, even though schools are closed here that day and I won't be going on my typical route. That's a bummer, but we are going to do things here. We do a outreach homebound mail service. We don't have a lot of smokers but we have a few. We use reusable zipper mailing bags from A Rifkin and Janway to mail our books but sometimes they come back so smelly that we designated them as "smokers bags." Today we took some Frebreeze and gave the bag a squirt inside and out. Guess what - no more smoke - it does smell faintly of "linen and sky" but much better than old cigarettes and musty basement. By the way, we do wash the bags too. -- MaryAnne Marjamaa Manager, Outreach Services St. Louis County Library St. Louis, MO 63131 qamarjamaa at gmail.com 314-994-3300 x 2330 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Obviously this is really popular so we only give out toys to those who bring their library card or apply for a new library card. That actual letter includes graphics from the Reading Program. Dear Sir or Madam The Anaheim Public Library system is offering a summer reading game to the children of our community to encourage them to continue reading throughout the summer. The theme of the game is Home Run Readers and is open to children from birth through high school. To increase enthusiasm and a sense of challenge for the reading game, we would like to offer incentive prizes to keep the children reading. Last year, over 9,000 children from Anaheim participated in the game and 3,000 completed the entire program. We have six library facilities and two bookmobiles. We would appreciate an incentive donation of any size that you can make. For your reference, our Federal Tax-ID Number is: 95-6000-666. We hope to include you in our summer reading program. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Keely Hall Principal Librarian, Bookmobile Voice Mail: 714-765-1769 Fax: 714-765-1730 Email: Khall at anaheim.net Anaheim Public Library 500 W. I tried printing a page and it is way off. So I thought it maybe didn't go through the printer right. So, I printed a page on regular paper and laid it on the stickers. No, it's off. So, has anyone else run into this? Is there a quick and easy solution? I have tried cut and paste to a new template, but it won't let me do that. If anyone has a solution, I'd appreciate hearing it. Otherwise, new 2010 diesel emissions requirements (and other materials cost increases) have generally caused prices to increase across the board. Our current bookmobile has met and well exceeded its expected lifespan, having been on the road for over 22 years chugging its way through whatever conditions New England's weather has thrown at it. While some of this is also due to the maintenance our city's garage has provided I feel it is also a testament to the care and quality Moroney put into it. We purchased 2 bookmobiles within the last year and we are very disappointed at the workmanship of both. Our bookmobiles have had many issues with the wiring which causes problems with the generator, inverter, AC units, the dash board heat, etc. In addition the vehicles suspension is extremely bouncy hitting the bumps very hard. And little things like screws falling out of various places, window latches breaking off, unwelcome glaring sun coming in through the top windows that are supposed to naturally light the bookmobile but really should have been somewhat tinted because it can be pretty bad. And they took months past the expected delivery dates to complete. The only good news that I can share is that they look adorable..I love our graphics! Lynn Y. In addition to the above OBS Bookmobiles, we also operate a 1997 Moroney Bookmobile and, since you have 2 that are relatively new, I suggest that you be very vigilant about rust. I cannot emphasize this enough and there may still be something that you can add to your trucks to protect them since they are new and have only been in service through a winter. This has been a significant problem for us and it was also a factor in an adjoining county's library taking their vehicle off the road and ending their Bookmobile program because there was no money for a replacement. That vehicle was a few years older than ours but also had premature rust. We have been operating Bookmobiles since 1946 and none of the others have had unusual or unexpected levels of rust. Perhaps this company has addressed this rust problem and it is no longer a concern but it is something to consider. This is not my only reservation but it is something that you may want to address or at least watch for with your vehicles. While I am on my soapbox, I think it is significant that three of the major vendors support and participate in library conferences. Of course they are there to make a sale. But, while there, they also help educate library staff and they learn what the latest library developments are as well as what we want through their participation in round tables and informal discussions. Lynn Y.
